Coronation Street boss reveals ‘biggest story’ of 2024 involving surprising characters

As 2023 comes to an end, Iain MacLeod, the head of Coronation Street, has been hinting at what Weatherfield residents might expect at the beginning of 2024.

Super Soap Week this month saw the conclusion of Todd Boyce’s (Stephen Reid) dramatic reign of terror. Following the incident, new narratives have shown characters like Peter (Chris Gascoyne) attempting valiantly to abstain from alcohol once again and Tim (Joe Duttine) grappling with memories from the day Stephen assaulted him.

It is known that Peter Barlow will be absent from the cobbles throughout the holiday season. When Bobby, Carla’s (Alison King) nephew, shows up later, she’ll be in for a major shock.

Bobby, who has been called a “troublemaker with a heart of gold,” is expected to be a major player in a major plot in 2024.

“I think there is a really brilliant synergy between the performer and the character and he’s going to be a massive ball of energy and loads of fun and he’s just going to tip Carla’s life upside down in lots of very interesting ways,” Iain MacLeod told us recently. “I spoke to Jack about the part before he accepted the casting and he was just going down a mental check list of everything I was saying and going yep, tick, that’s me as well.”

“I’m really excited about the casting, the part, and his role in the next 12 months and beyond,” he said. “As a slightly more long-range tease, he’s going to end up surprisingly in the centre of perhaps our biggest story next year which I can’t say too much about now but he’s got a brilliant classically Coronation Street role to play at the start as this loveable sarcastic classic Corrie feckless male and then he abruptly finds himself in the middle of this huge story next year.”

Additionally, the showrunner indicated that Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon), who just made a comeback, would play a role in this storyline.

“Bethany has returned, and we are all incredibly happy to have her back. The viewers adore her, and she is very well-liked throughout the building.” She’s changed much since we last saw her—many years have passed, she’s matured considerably, and she had the start of a lucrative journalistic career in London. When she reappears, Daisy finds her to be an immediate enemy, Iain disclosed.

“They’re very evenly matched now. While Bethany used to seem more like a girl or younger woman, she’s much more of a woman now, more on Daisy’s level. It’s a really heavyweight tussle between these two women, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of it. In addition, she will find herself at the centre of this huge story that we have coming up next year, much like Bobby, played by Jack Carroll.

She is returning to the Daniel tale with a very specific love goal in mind, but she will also very soon find herself at the centre of a huge narrative that will take place over the most of the next year. At times, it’s been really difficult to watch because it doesn’t feel like you’re watching a performance; rather, it feels like you’re watching a young man really going through this. I think Ryan Prescott has been absolutely fantastic, and Charlie has been exceptional throughout the story, from the beginning of the stalking right up until now.

As the holidays get near, Iain also alluded to a few really touching sequences involving Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) and his family.

Paul, who suffers from motor neurone disease, will soon learn that his time on earth is limited to six to twelve months, meaning that this Christmas will be his last.

“We’re always eager to keep that family occupied so that the medical story keeps moving forward, but as all sick people have to deal with, we also have to deal with catastrophes that have nothing to do with the illness at all. This Christmas, the catastrophe stems from Bernie’s past involvement in Shelly’s questionable online scamming, and it lands her in a tonne of legal hot water to the point where it’s highly likely that she won’t be there for what will likely be Paul’s final Christmas and that the family won’t be able to spend one last joyful moment together,” Iain stated.

There’s also a fairly interesting look into their past, which shows that the twins’ family was dispersed across the country for a large portion of their early years. They were poor, things weren’t going well, and Paul had a history of abuse from his stepfather.

We’ve made an effort to make it realistic yet bittersweet since there are a lot of very touching moments as well.

“Last Christmas was appropriate, humorous, and heartfelt, with that amazing family at its core.”
