Coronation Street exit after Bernie Winter misses Paul’s last Christmas over jail threat

EXCLUSIVE: Bernie Winter of Coronation Street has always done everything in her power to support her family financially, even if it’s not always legal and frequently gets her into trouble.

Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove) of Coronation Street may find herself in legal hot water as she tries to assist Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) in getting funding for his home medical equipment.

According to official ITV spoilers, Paul will clarify in future scenes that he has filed for the PIP, but it will take 11 weeks.

Bernie is heartbroken for her son and worries about how he and Daniel Brocklebank’s Billy Mayhew will get by till then.

Bernie, in need of money, comes up with a scheme and meets with Big Garth (Victor McGuire) to beg him to flog the rest of their goods at a reduced price.

Big Garth gives Bernie a bundle of cash in the station, but they are unaware that a police officer is taking pictures.

Bernie’s family is left in disarray when she is detained on suspicion of handling stolen goods on her way home.

Later, when Joseph Brown (William Flanagan) is admitted to A&E by Abi Franklin (Sally Carman), Bernie questions how much more terrible news they can all handle.

Bernie releases herself to Abi, feeling guilty and attributing Paul’s illness on her own bad parenting.

Is this the beginning of a stormy Christmas for the family, or will Bernie be able to escape with a warning from the police?

Iain MacLeod, the head of Coronation Street, recently shared some unfavorable news and talked about what lies next for the family.

“When Bernie becomes embroiled in Shelly’s slightly suspicious online scamming, the Christmas calamity occurs.

It lands her in so much legal hot water that it’s quite likely she won’t be there for what will likely be Paul’s final Christmas.

“It is classic Winter/Brown scams and machinations, and throughout it all, Bernie is just Bernie, with this knowledge layered on top of him.

“They don’t discuss it much, but it’s layered with the knowledge of his catastrophic previous Christmas and the possibility that the family won’t be around for this final holiday season.

“What we have tried to do is make it realistic and bittersweet as much as we could and fitting funny, but fairly poignant last Christmas for Paul.”

If Bernie ends up behind bars, could there be an escape planned?
