Coronation Street spoilers: Breakthrough for Paul as equipment replicates his voice

Another significant event (Image: ITV)

In Coronation Street, Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) is getting ready for the last stages of his life, when he will be unable to accomplish even the most basic tasks due to a motor neurone illness, such as talking.

Paul met with an assessor recently to discuss his Personal Independence Payment. Paul will be able to purchase equipment that will make him feel more comfortable every day with the money he gets from this benefit.

In the upcoming episode of the ITV soap opera, Paul discusses his recent coughing spells and his appointment with his speech therapist.

Bernie (Jane Hazlegrove), who knows they need to see the MND nurse, joins Paul for the meeting.

Billy (Daniel Brocklebank) comes, and the family hears the nurse say she will complete a form to expedite Paul’s benefits.

Paul informs Bernie and Billy that an SR1 is intended for an individual who is terminally sick and is not expected to live for more than a year after realising it is an SR1 application.

The nurse then affirms that Paul’s time on earth is limited to the next six to twelve months.

Paul and Billy will see the speech therapist again the following week. Paul acknowledges that he will soon get to a point when he won’t be able to communicate, and they say they would like to replicate his replacement voice using his actual voice. This is another distressing moment.

Iain MacLeod recently alluded to potentially more poignant situations for Paul and his family as the holiday season draws near.

“We always want to keep that family occupied so that the medical narrative continues, but as is our fate when we are ill, we also have to deal with events that have nothing to do with the illness,” he clarified.

“This Christmas, the crisis stems from Bernie and her past complicity in Shelly’s questionable online fraud, placing her in a great deal of legal hot water to the point where it’s highly likely that she won’t be there for what will likely be Paul’s final Christmas and that the family won’t get to spend one last joyful moment together,” Iain stated.

There’s also a fairly interesting look into their past, which shows that the twins’ family was dispersed throughout the winds for a large portion of their early years. They were poor, things weren’t going well, and Paul had a history of abuse from his stepfather.

We’ve made an effort to make it realistic yet bittersweet because there are a lot of really touching moments as well.

“Last Christmas was appropriate, humorous, and heartfelt, with that amazing family at its core.”
