Coronation Street spoilers: Heartbreak as Bernie prepares for prison ahead of Paul’s last Christmas

The timing is terrible (Picture: ITV)

Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove) was recently arrested on Coronation Street for handling stolen goods.

Bernie made the decision to meet with Big Garth in an attempt to sell the remaining gear after finding out that Paul’s (Peter Ash) benefits would not start to arrive for another 11 weeks or so.

Bernie didn’t know a policeman was taking pictures of her and her friend in the precinct while she was talking to them.

Bernie was taken away in a police car on her way home, and her smile vanished from her face.

Bernie initially exuded confidence and assured Dev (Jimmi Harkishin) that there was no need to be concerned about her suffering any repercussions.

But this week, Bernie appeared in court, entered a guilty plea, and then informed Paul, who was dying, that she might spend six months in prison, meaning she wouldn’t be present for her son’s last Christmas.

Bernie is informed by duty solicitor Joel (Calum Lill) that she must get ready for a jail sentence.

Bernie, who may not be around at the end of 2023, finds Gemma (Dolly-Rose Campbell) and informs her that she may be in jail during the holiday season.

Can the family, though, handle this?

“She is very angry and hates herself,” Jane Hazlegrove said.

“She won’t be there again when they most need her.” That kind of thing ought to be permanently inked on her arm as a reminder. Because, after all, it’s just another pattern? She has let them down and, in all honesty, she has never been more needed.

They are now bearing the cost of possibly losing her presence because she tried to assist them without considering the potential repercussions. She’s disorganised.
