In this week’s episode of Coronation Street, Amy Barlow (Elle Mulvaney) took decisive action against a sexual offender when she caught a man named Dan spiking a woman’s drink.
Amy flirted with Dan after admonishing the woman and making sure she was safe. She made sure he was the one who drank every time he brought her a drink, and eventually he was completely stoned.
After Amy gave Adam Hussain’s number, Aadi, they drove Dan away. Amy had intended to tie him up somewhere, but Aadi convinced her that they had to take him to the hospital right away.
Following this, DS Swain (Vicky Myers) visited Amy and Aadi on Monday, November 20th, and brought them both to the station to answer questions after Dan told the police that Amy had drugged him.
Amy’s horrific past and the fact that she was sexually assaulted by Aaron Sandford (James Craven), whom she had previously considered a close friend, are well known to DS Swain. She was sympathetic to Amy’s potential motivations, but she was also determined to find out if Amy had really planned to drug Dan as retaliation.
Aadi made an effort to maintain the narrative that he and Amy had agreed upon, but both of them quickly broke down when questioned. Amy made a wise decision when she asked Dee-Dee Bailey (Channique Sterling-Brown) to attend her interview for legal advice, as she was informed that she could spend as much as five years in prison.
Amy was eventually allowed to leave by DS Swain, who also disclosed to her that Dan was now under police investigation after being recognised by other victims of sexual assault.
While Aadi was still filling in for Amy at home, Tracy (Kate Ford) insisted on knowing what had happened. He’s being a great friend to Amy, and it appears that they both hope their friendship will grow beyond that.
However, Amy instantly experienced flashbacks to the rape and withdrew, upset, as they leaned in for a kiss. Fearing Aadi had offended her, Steve (Simon Gregson) and Dev (Jimmi Harkishin) stormed in.
Amy later confessed to wanting to kiss Aadi for a very long time when she told Nina (Mollie Gallagher) about the kiss.
She questioned, “Why couldn’t I enjoy it like a normal person?”
In the meantime, Dev was giving his son advice to keep in mind that Amy had experienced a dreadful trauma and would require some time to recover. He said that Aadi needed to understand that it might take her years to recover from the rape and to show her some space.
Amy had been prepared to tell Aadi that she was pleased with the kiss and was willing to give the relationship a shot when the two ran into each other later. But Aadi told her that it would be better if they were just friends, keeping Dev’s words in mind. She said “yes” when he asked if she agreed.
According to Elle Mulvaney, this plot points to a more nuanced stage in Amy’s life following the rape.
As much as Amy has liked him for a while, she said, “I think the difficult part will be how a rape victim finds a way to be intimate with people again and overcomes the fact that she has been raped.”
“I believe it’s very difficult for people to become fine again and become okay with being intimate with somebody who has experienced something as terrible as this.” It’s extremely difficult to even entertain the notion of dating someone again.
