Emmerdale spoilers: Sad ending as broken David’s exit scenes are revealed

David is about to go (Image: ITV)

It’s time for David (Matthew Wolfenden) to hang up his apron as Emmerdale’s beloved shopkeeper, but he’s departing under a cloud of treachery from his family rather than heading off on an exciting new adventure.

David is unaware of two very important and upsetting secrets: his father’s progressive illness and his son’s involvement with his former partner. Both are just as destructive.

David is celebrating his birthday, which ought to be a happy event, but it turns out to be strange as he spends it with his son Jacob (Joe-Warren Plant) and his former girlfriend Victoria (Isabel Hodgins). He is unaware that they have been having covert affairs behind his back. Although David is aware that Jacob has a new girlfriend, he is adamant on finding out who she is.

He has some doubts. Jacob is more than willing to let him think that Gabby (Rosie Bentham) is his new fancy girlfriend.

Even though David is obviously attempting to play detective, Jacob and Victoria don’t trust his investigative abilities and are comfortable enough to take advantage of an empty home for some mischievous activities. Although they don’t expect him home early, Jacob tries to mislead him by saying Gabby, not Victoria, is hidden upstairs.

At first, David doesn’t believe it, but Jacob uses his skill at deceit to persuade David to go. They exhale with relief, but Vic recalls that she has misplaced the bracelet David gave her, and the game is over if he finds it.

They search for the jewellery and come upon it on the ground. The couple, relieved, gives one other a deep kiss and expresses gratitude to the heavens for their good fortune.

Is that right? David can see everything via the window where they are kissing.

With a look of treachery on his face and his life crumbling before his eyes, David chooses to bid Emmerdale a last goodbye, leaving all the pain behind.
