Since Cassie’s reappearance on Coronation Street, Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman) and her daughter Cassie (Claire Sweeney) have not had the easiest of relationships.

Even though Evelyn made an effort to support Cassie in overcoming her drug addiction, since moving to Weatherfield, Cassie has already experienced multiple relapses. In addition, she misled Tyrone (Alan Halsall) about her upbringing, attributing all of her problems in life to her mother.

Cassie has encountered a lot of opposition despite her recent best efforts to mend fences with her family, particularly with her granddaughter Hope (Isabella Flanagan). Since Tyrone and Hope discovered Cassie unconscious from an overdose, Hope is distrustful of Cassie and is cautious around her.

In the episode from Wednesday, December 6, Evelyn returned to find Cassie putting up the Christmas tree.

Cassie revealed that she had fond memories of Christmas as a child, surprising Evelyn with her daughter’s engagement in such a cosy home activity. She even recalled a glass ornament of a reindeer that she had loved in the past.

You mean this one, right? With a reach into a small bag, Evelyn asked. Evidently, she also believed that the small reindeer was valuable enough to be kept safe; alternatively, perhaps it brought back memories of joyous Christmases spent with Cassie prior to their romantic mishap.

Evelyn gave her some advise on how to handle Hope, giving the impression that she was trying to connect with her daughter. You need to learn how to keep one step ahead of Hope because she is a very intelligent person, she said.

Evelyn later witnessed an incident in which a man was mistreating and abusing his dog. Nothing bothers Evelyn more than animal abuse, so she went straight up to the man.

He quickly became hostile, threatening both her and Roy when he came out to assist. The two friends appeared to be in grave danger at one point, but Evelyn managed to get Roy to record the interaction on her phone. Fortunately, Cassie arrived and told the man to move on.

He did, but not before Evelyn, brandishing a bag of mint imperials, gave his van a serious run-in.

Evelyn and Cassie are going to experience some severe, long-term effects from this incident.

Maureen Lipman told us that although Cassie is a bit of an old hand at things, she is kind of an extended version of Evelyn, and when she goes too far, it puts Evelyn’s life in jeopardy and leads to more problems.

However, Evelyn expressed gratitude to Hope for her daughter’s intervention in the short term and said that Cassie is the kind of person you would want on your side.

To her grandmother’s joy, Hope gave in and invited Cassie to her birthday celebration after she urged her great-granddaughter to give Cassie a chance. Apparently, her words had an impact.
