Coronation Street’s Gemma Winter (Dolly-Rose Campbell) is now under a great deal of stress. Her brother Paul (Peter Ash) has a fatal illness, and her mother Bernie (Jane Hazlegrove) was been sentenced to six months in jail.

In addition to such issues, social services is presently looking into Gemma for inadvertently poisoning her son Joseph (William Flanagan). She is only permitted to visit Joseph and her other children, Aled, Bryn, Carys, and Llio, while another adult is there; she is not permitted to remain in the same house as them while the inquiry is on.

It’s clear that it has severely strained both her and her relationship with Chesney. In the episode that aired on Wednesday, December 6, Chesney came to visit her at Paul and Billy’s (Daniel Brocklebank) apartment to apologise for making fun of her earlier. The pair gave each other a strong embrace after he told her he loved her and that they will get through this difficult time.

The high point of Gemma’s day was about to come to an end when Chesney informed her that he had been speaking with Joseph’s grandmother, Linda (Jacqueline Leonard).

Linda is a resident in Portugal, and her sporadic trips to Weatherfield are usually dramatic. She is pretty affluent and has no qualms about blowing her money on luxuries like wedding clothes or a luxurious hotel stay for her and Joseph.

This simply helps to emphasise how difficult it is for Chesney and Gemma to make ends meet, but Linda never appears to notice this.

Gemma became quite angry when she learned that Linda was going to pay her a visit in the new year. She didn’t really want Linda to see the family when they were at their lowest point, even if dealing with her wasn’t fun at all.

Iain MacLeod, the head of Corrie, assured us that Linda’s return to her typical conduct pattern wouldn’t be prolonged.

Joseph’s enchanted guardian angel appears as Linda. He said, “She makes the decision that she will solve Joseph’s academic problems and begins to lavish money on the situation, which puts Chesney and Gemma in this hopeless situation.”

“It doesn’t feel right that Linda is coming in and saving the day with her chequebook.” Nevertheless, they also need to put Joseph’s needs first as he is struggling and could use the assistance.

Iain also said that it would put Chesney in a difficult predicament.

There are conflicts since Gemma is not Joseph’s real mother, so it’s intriguing to consider if Chesney supports Joseph, Linda, and biology. Or is he more on Gemma’s side?
