As soon as Roy Cropper (David Neilson) becomes ill, there’s an emergency in the Coronation Street cafe, and Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman), Roy’s best friend, steps in to try to save the day.
This year, Evelyn and Roy’s friendship has grown significantly. Roy gave Evelyn a stack of letters addressed to his close friends and family a few months prior to his surgery.
Evelyn being Evelyn, the temptation to open her letter was too strong, even though he instructed her to distribute the letters only in case something went wrong during the procedure.
She read the envelope, which she held over a steaming kettle, and was moved to read Roy’s words, which explained how much Evelyn means to him.
Roy stood by Evelyn a few days ago when she confronted the owner of an illegal puppy farm.
Maureen Lipman informed us, “Everyone who loves her is attempting to stop her from following him because he threatens Evelyn twice and he is pretty dangerous and thuggish.”
The performer portraying him is excellent. There were a few scenes where we had a fight coordinator on standby. Even though Evelyn is obviously terrified, she won’t acknowledge it. But because she loves Tyrone so much, it becomes really problematic when he threatens to hurt him if she doesn’t stop. She understands that in order to keep her family safe, she must step back.
As Christmas approaches, Evelyn will advise Tyrone (Alan Halsall) to take the girls to Norfolk to visit Fiz (Jennie McAlpine) while she celebrates with Roy in upcoming episodes.
When Evelyn realises that Cassie (Claire Sweeney) is left on her own, she grudgingly extends an invitation for her to accompany them.
Afterwards, Roy has a back spasm in the cafe.
Sue Devaney’s character Debbie assists Roy upstairs as Evelyn gets a pinny and tells Roy she’ll cover for him.
Cassie then suggests a gift that Roy should give Evelyn because she knows the two friends are close. But what will Evelyn’s reaction be on the actual big day?
