ITV Coronation Street Bernie Winter’s real-life off-screen – soap star lookalike and wife

Fans are devastated that Bernie Winter of Coronation Street is walking away this Christmas. However, what is the off-screen life of performer Jane Hazlegrove like?

Despite her gobby appearance and somewhat harsh exterior, Bernie Winters will be missed by Coronation Street viewers when she departs this Christmas.

Since her arrival on Corrie back in 2019, the mother of twins Gemma and Paul—whom she actually called Gemini and Apollo—has been causing fans to giggle. The character wasn’t very well-liked when she first came more than four years ago because she didn’t get along well with her children and had a history of breaking the law.

But, in the present, her supporters will be disappointed that her character is departing because she has shown herself to be endearing, witty, and quirky. Though the character she plays on television gets jail time for dealing in stolen goods, what is actress Jane Hazlegrove’s real life like off screen?

The family’s Christmas lunch in full swing

Despite the fact that Bernie’s son Paul suffers from motor neurone disease (MND), her most recent narrative finds her serving a Christmas prison sentence. Even worse, social services caught up with daughter Gemma when the family was enjoying an early Christmas celebration. They believe she could be a threat to her stepson Joseph as well as Chesney’s four quads. Jane recently revealed to Soap magazine how she drew inspiration from her own pain to film Paul’s heartbreaking MND storyline.

The actress said, “I was gutted as this meant he would be going. I adore Peter Ash [who plays Paul], so I was very upset [when I found out about the plot].” “We are a close-knit family in my corrie. Working with all of them is such a blessing. I recently lost my dad, so I understand what this type of grief is like. It’s been really sentimental.

Gabrielle Glaister even played Jane Hazlegrove’s doppelganger on Corrie

In brighter news, Jane frequently confuses fellow actress Gabrielle Glaister—who portrayed Patricia Farnham in Brookside—for her famous double. Before starring as Bernie’s twin Fern in Corrie last year, Gabrielle also acted in a number of Blackadder episodes. Jane remarked, “Gabby and I get confused for each other all the time.”

We’ve laughed about it a lot together, but I then thought it may be entertaining to cast her as Bernie’s doppelgänger or secret twin on the programme. When they informed me they had come up with this plot and that Gabby was on board, I was overjoyed.

“A person who used to work with Gabby started talking to me at the Soap Awards shortly after I found out we were doing the story, mistaking me for her. I pointed out who I was, and the actor looked horrified, but I don’t mind if people think I’m Gabby. It’s a really big praise.

However, what does Jane’s life look like behind closed doors? Her spouse, Isobel Middleton, has brought her happiness, and they share a puppy named Gert. Jane frequently participates in fundraising events like Sober October to benefit Macmillan Cancer and Save the Arts campaigns. She also routinely supports Pride events. In addition, Isobel is an actor who has acted in shows like Doctor Who, Marcella, Cracker, Silent Witness, and Holby City.

In 2022, Jane disclosed their relationship, saying, “After doing a play in London Town 25 years ago, I met a woman named Wiz that night. Eight house moves, three cities, and a lot of love and laughter later, here we are 25 years later.” 10 years as civil partners, 5 years as married! I adore you, sweetheart, to the core of my being. As my wise, elderly friend once stated, this love represents my greatest accomplishment. And I’m happy to say that I can now recall your name!

Following Isobel’s illness in 2010, Jane and Isobel became civil partners. Isobel hadn’t been feeling well, so that’s why we did it, Jane explained to The Metro. Even though we had lived together for fifteen years, it quickly became apparent that I wasn’t really allowed to know anything about her because we weren’t connected. I was quite pissed off that I was powerless to stop what was happening to her. Thankfully, everything turned out OK, but I recall us saying over breakfast the morning following the civil partnership, “Nobody can touch us now.”
