It’s likely that Kim Tate (Claire King) believed she was doing everyone a favour when she abandoned Craig Reed (Ben Addis) in a field in Emmerdale.
After raping her friend Lydia Dingle (Karen Blick), Craig further worsened Lydia’s situation by lying to her about the incident, claiming it was consensual, and tricking Sam (James Hooton) and Samson (Sam Hall) into believing he was a nice guy.
Certainly not what Kim had planned when she discovered Craig, beaten up by Sam, wandering through one of her fields. However, her first response was to leave Craig to die when her horse reared up and its hoof struck his head, killing him almost instantaneously. She then used Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) to cover up the fact that she had been there at all.
Kim revealed the true events in an attempt to support her friend Lydia when she was unable to let go of the thought that Sam might have been the reason behind Craig’s death. Unprepared for Lydia’s rage, she believed their friendship had ended after Kim had deceived her.
All of this was weighing hard on Kim in the episode that aired on Wednesday, December 20, especially in light of Sam’s visit. Seeing the Christmas bonus as hush money to keep him quiet, he declined to accept it from her.
He accused her, “You think I might tell people what you did,” and stormed away.
As he listened to everything, Will (Dean Andrews) wanted to hear the truth, but he already knew what it would be. “You murdered Craig,” he uttered.
Kim informed him what had transpired, covering up her statement that “there was nothing we could have done” that virtually suggested Cain was involved.
Will was enraged with her and told her that she had no other considerations. What would have happened if Craig had been discovered dead by Clemmie (Mabel Addison), Lucas (Noah Ryan Aspinall), or Dawn (Olivia Bromley)? He went through every lie she had given to hide her involvement in the events, including the one about letting her prized horse run free to create the impression that Craig had been hurt by the animal after it had fled.
Kim maintained that her silence had been for Will’s protection.
“How did the other men in your life fare with that?” He insisted. How is Frank doing right now? Graham, perhaps?
Both of Kim’s ex-husbands, Frank Tate (Norman Bowler) and Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough), passed away inexplicably. Frank’s son, Caleb Milligan (William Ash), is still of the opinion that Kim killed him.
Will informed her that he doesn’t trust anything she says, including this. “I believe you enjoy having power,” he said.
Will said to her, “I would say this isn’t the woman I married, but I’m beginning to think this is exactly the person you’ve always been,” in response to her assertion that Craig’s death had been an accident.
Later, when he still hadn’t cooled down and their relationship was so tense, Billy (Jay Kontzle) advised them to work things out since Dawn didn’t need the tension.
Kim told her husband that she didn’t want this to be the end of their relationship after Billy had gone to give Dawn a foot rub.
He gave a dismal response.
He said, “Maybe this is where you finally realise that you don’t control everything,” leaving Kim to question whether her marriage can be saved.
