Emmerdale 2024 preview: New faces, a family crisis and secrets exposed

What lies ahead for the village residents? (Picture: REX/ITV)

Having faced terrible peril at the hands of Damon ‘Harry’ Harris (Robert Beck), you’d think Emmerdale’s Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) would desire a calm existence from now on. But 2024 finds Mack beginning on a life of auto crime with partner in crime Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) – and it’s not long before Cain (Jeff Hordley) gets involved.

A major obstacle arises in the shape of Caleb Milligan (William Ash), the brother of Cain, who is determined to continue his dangerous affair with Tracy Robinson (Amy Walsh). Ruby (Beth Cordingly), who happens to be Nicky’s mother, is Caleb’s wife.

In January, a familiar figure is expected to make a comeback to the village, and Paula Lane, who will play Ella Forster on the programme, will bring another familiar face.

Since this is a soap opera, we can always count on births, deaths, and marriages. Tom (James Chase) and Belle (Eden Taylor-Draper) are getting married on Valentine’s Day, and it’s the big wedding we’re looking forward to. Will the pair have a happily ever after?

As we begin another year in the most spectacular village in the Dales, here is all the information you need to know.

Mackenzie and Aaron form a criminal alliance – and risk the wrath of Cain

Mackenzie faced a traumatic Christmas (Picture: ITV)

After a difficult Christmas and New Year’s, Mackenzie Boyd finds himself in even more difficulty at the beginning of 2024 when he joins forces with Aaron to steal automobiles. When they target a car that the garage is fixing, Mack diverts their attention, leading Aaron to believe that everything is OK. However, they are clearly putting themselves at danger of Cain’s wrath by taking a car from the garage.

Producer Laura Shaw of Emmerdale believes that this plot will result in a major power struggle between Aaron and Cain.

“We’ll see some tensions between those two rising, which will culminate in a really vicious physical altercation between Cain and Aaron in the new year.” What will be the winner among those? Who will prevail in this fight? It will be interesting to watch to see whether they both manage to escape unscathed.

Meanwhile, Charity (Emma Atkins) is finding it difficult to deal with what happened to Harry. Will Mackenzie provide the help she requires? And how long will their romance last?

Rhona clings to Ivy

Rhona’s emotions continue to be challenged (Picture: ITV)

Rhona (Zoe Henry) will never fully get over her affections for little Ivy. Rhona’s natural attachment with her biological daughter has strengthened since the infant stayed with them over Christmas. When Marlon (Mark Charnock) acknowledges that she feels like she’s Ivy’s mother and asks for his assistance in making Ivy a permanent member of their family, Marlon’s concerns are validated.

“Is she going to lose everything in her quest to help baby Ivy, or can she be talked out of it as she is being pushed to the breaking point?” stated Laura.

Caleb’s wife arrives amid his and Tracy’s affair

In an attempt to break free from Caleb’s impact on her life at the beginning of the year, Tracy approaches Rosie Bentham’s character Gabby to become an investor in her nursery concept. In the meanwhile, she takes a chance when she thinks of telling Nate (Jurell Carter) the truth about her relationship with Caleb in an effort to maintain control of the circumstance. Would she truly be willing to ruin her marriage?

Caleb maintains that their connection is still going strong and isn’t easily deterred. But when his wife Ruby shows up in the area, he is quickly dealt a blow.

Laura stated, “She’s going to be an absolute firecracker.” She’s going to give the Dingles a serious setback. Is this the end of Caleb and her relationship as he’s made it seem? I suppose we’ll find out in the new year!

Bob and Cathy hit rock bottom

A party goes terribly wrong for the Hope family (Picture: ITV)

When Cathy (Gabrielle Dowling) uses Wendy (Susan Cookson)’s vehicle to drive herself, Heath (Sebastian Dowling), and Angelica King (Rebecca Bakes) to a party in Hotten, New Year’s Eve goes terribly wrong for Bob (Tony Audenshaw). As soon as Bob sees what has happened, he and Wendy start to pursue, while Heath and Angelica urge Cathy to accelerate.

This will unavoidably have long-term effects and put Bob and Cathy’s relationship to the test, which is already stressed due to Cathy’s health issues.

Laura Shaw said, “They’re going to hit rock bottom.” “Will it bring them closer together or rip them apart?”

Huge, shocking story for Chas

Chas faces a surprise when the new year begins (Picture: ITV)

The year 2024 for Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) opens with the prospect of a startling new love—with GP Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson). As they come to terms with their loneliness and desire for love, the two get closer and eventually share a kiss.

However, Laura Shaw has informed us that Chas is about to experience a great deal of turmoil, which will be “shocking for all her family and friends and villagers around her.” Laura also made a suggestion that this may be the catalyst for Aaron and Chas’s eventual reconciliation as the mother and son mend their damaged bond.

Is Chas having a health crisis? That could help Aaron put his hatred towards his mother behind him and concentrate on what his priorities should be. Or are there more plans in store for Chas according to the Emmerdale fates?

Paula Lane makes her debut as Ella Forster

Former Corrie star Paula Lane has joined Emmerdale (Picture: ITV)

Paula Lane’s character Ella Forster is another newcomer who will debut in early 2024. “Hardworking, down-to-earth, doesn’t mince her words, always sticking up for people if she sees they’re in trouble,” is how Ella is described. This trait is seen in her very first appearance when she defends Lisa Riley’s character Mandy Dingle at a veterinarian gala.

She eventually moves to the area and works at the doctor’s office as a result of this unintentionally.

Paula Lane said, “I am so happy to be here.” It seems quite bizarre. I’m simply ecstatic to be beginning a new chapter and adding my mark on it.

Ella will soon be leaving her imprint on the community and attracting the attention of a certain man.

Will Lydia mend her relationships with Sam and Kim?

Lydia recently left the village after discovering the truth about Craig’s death (Picture: ITV)

After being raped by her old friend Craig Reed (Ben Addis), Lydia Dingle (Karen Blick) had a terrible year in 2023. Lydia felt betrayed by Sam (James Hooton) for going against her wishes and beating Craig up when Cain and Sam decided to deal Craig some Dingle justice.

Even worse, Sam appeared to have a possibility when Craig’s body was discovered. In actuality, Kim (Claire King) had been riding the horse when Craig was murdered in an odd occurrence; nonetheless, Lydia was quite furious that her friend had withheld this information from her.

Lydia tried to make sense of all this, so she left the community to spend Christmas with her mother. She told Sam she loved him, but her friendship with Kim and their future together were left uncertain.

When Kim doesn’t give up on her buddy in 2024, Lydia and Kim ultimately make a partial reunion.

Laura Shaw remarked, “We’ll see if they can get their friendship back on track in the new year.” Are Sam and Lydia ever going to be able to get past this, too? I’m hoping that the new year will give them some fresh optimism.

Huge storyline for Moira

What lies ahead for Moira? (Picture: ITV)

As Moira (Natalie J. Robb) tries to assist another villager in solving an issue, she is about to reveal a significant revelation to them. Moira has been keeping this to herself her whole life, and if it is discovered, it may completely upend her world. Is it truly safe for her to confide in this person?

And what could the secret be?

Jacob and Victoria’s romance causes shocks

Jacob and Vic look to the future (Picture: ITV)

The relationship between Jacob (Joe-Warren Plant) and Victoria (Isabel Hodgins) is soon known. Gabby first gets the raw deal, believing that Jacob has affections for her, but she quickly learns that’s not the case.

The devoted pair sets up a meeting after realising they can’t wait to inform Pollard (Chris Chittell) and Leyla (Roxy Shahidi). How will the news affect Jacob’s family members, particularly the part about David (Matthew Wolfenden) leaving for London for this reason?

Wedding bells for Belle

The pair is getting married, and as they are in a soap opera, the big day is set for Valentine’s Day. This follows their joyous engagement, during which Belle Dingle proposed to Tom King with the assistance of Torvill and Dean.

Although the couple appears to be happy right now, fans are aware that there was an ugly incident before the engagement in which Tom yelled at Belle after she initially rejected his proposal. As much as Tom protested, was this really a one-off? Or may that aspect of Tom come back?

An old face returns, and other hints

“We’ve got a familiar face returning in the new year,” Laura Shaw informed us. This individual returns to assist a villager who is having a little difficulty. You’ll have to speculate as to who the well-known face may be returning in January.

Not too long to wait, but who might it be, while their identity is still unknown?

In another scene, Pollard accepts his Parkinson’s diagnosis and asks Patrick Mower’s character Rodney for assistance in facing his anxieties.

Oscar (Harley Hamilton), a new grandchild who wishes to get back in touch with his parents Gail (Rachael Gill-Davis) and Ryan (James Moore), joins Charity’s family.

But when Oscar starts asking questions about his family history, Charity is compelled to come clean about Ryan’s father, rapist Mark Bails. What will Oscar’s response be?
