‘What will be will be’: Emmerdale’s Emma Atkins reflects on axe for Charity Dingle

What lies ahead for Charity? (Picture: ITV)

We’ve seen Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) struggle to deal with the anguish and guilt of having taken someone’s life, especially someone as vicious and dangerous as Damon “Harry” Harris (Robert Beck), ever since she murdered him in a violent confrontation in Emmerdale.

Emma Atkins shared with us Charity’s feelings after Harry’s passing.

She never has been in that scenario before, even if she did it to rescue Mackenzie (Lawrence Robb). It’s the continual replaying of that moment. She has never been in possession of a gun.

It’s also so intimate that I believe it to be completely traumatizing and incomprehensible to anybody. I believe that she is so troubled by it that she finds it difficult to connect to anybody.

These sensations only become worse with time, Emma said. She’s going to have a lot of PTSD since she’s replaying the event all the time. She is living in her own hell as the shutters are about to come down. It becomes worse since she’s attempting to compartmentalize and keep everything within. She is just a ticking time bomb since she is unable to handle the situation. She is disoriented.

As the plot develops, Charity attempts to keep prior traumas hidden inside of herself, such as the assault she endured at the hands of rapist Mark Bails (Rocky Marshall), but the trauma of just one occurrence causes PTSD.

“I’m reading a ton of stuff that the researchers sent me, and it will be challenging but rewarding,” Emma said.

“It will begin to spiral out of control, with everything rising to the surface and being revisited.” I’ve been teasing myself with a therapy session, but it seems like it would take a decade or more! It seems like there would be too much to cover in one sitting.

In soap operas, it is customary for a character who turns into a murderer to have a limited amount of time left in the show since killers are always required to exact their revenge. Emma said that she wondered whether Charity’s tenure on the program would soon come to an end after reading in the script that she had murdered Harry.

She said to us, “I guess I’m a bit like what will be will be.”

You can never really be afraid of these things because, even if my tenure at Emmerdale ends, I will always be able to support myself since acting is my career and I have chosen to pursue it. You just follow the current. There was a moment when I thought, “Oh my God, my character has killed.”

But after reading the screenplay, I realized that, in reality, it’s a kind gesture. It’s a defensive move for oneself. She doesn’t intentionally do it. There is no intention of murder. That gave me some relief, I think!
