This post includes spoilers for this Wednesday’s (January 17) episode of EastEnders, which you can view on BBC iPlayer right now even though it hasn’t yet aired on television.
Kim Medcalf’s character Sam Mitchell is known for showing up in Albert Square and causing trouble for as many people as she can, and her most recent appearance on EastEnders hasn’t shown her to be an exception.
Sam learned recently that her brother Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) had an affair with Emma Harding (Patsy Kensit), the wife of Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) – knowledge that might be hazardous in her possession.
This was a terrible mix, especially with Phil not giving Sam her portion of Aunt Sal’s money.
Sam did not waste any time in using his disgusting secret as a means of blackmailing Phil. If he did not give Kat her half of Aunt Sal’s money, Sam would tell Kat everything.
Sam clarified that she was serious about her intention to inform Kat when Phil brought up the fact that she still owed him £50,000 and that amount was still insufficient. Sam also said that she had been working for free at Peggy’s in an effort to pay it off.
Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden) quickly sensed that something was up when Phil divulged that Sam had dirt on him and was requesting money from her. Phil had been thinking about blackmail.
After Ben quickly advised him to simply give the money to Ben so he could live a tranquil life, Phil began to reflect and finally told Sam that she could take the money as long as she left Albert Square.
Sam didn’t waste any time in seeing her son Ricky Mitchell (Frankie Day) and telling him that she would need to take a temporary leave of absence due to her disagreement with Phil about Aunt Sal’s bequest.
Remarkably, Ricky sympathised completely and complimented her for defending herself against bully Phil.
Sam went to Phil and Kat’s joint karaoke birthday celebration with Ricky’s OK, and he quickly gave up the cash.
But when Phil called Sam a coward and likened her to their father, things became ugly. Phil responded to Sam’s observation that he must really despise her by claiming that he wouldn’t think about her after she departed.
Sam, visibly upset and filled with rage, stepped up to the microphone in front of a crowded Vic and vowed to offer him something special.
There, she started talking about family and Phil’s prior marriages before shocking Kat by revealing that he had slept with Emma.
