Emmerdale spoilers: Cathy’s heartbreaking reason over funeral request as Bob loses it

Bob and Cathy clashed again (Picture: ITV)

As Heath Hope’s (Sebastian Dowling) funeral in Emmerdale neared, his stepmother Brenda Walker (Lesley Dunlop) realised she needed to take action about Bob Hope’s (Tony Audenshaw) silence towards his daughter Cathy (Gabrielle Dowling).

Bob holds Cathy responsible for Heath’s death in the automobile accident, even though Cathy took Wendy’s (Susan Cookson) vehicle to transport herself, her brother, and Angelica King (Rebecca Bakes) to a party in Hotten.

Cathy has maintained that Angelica took over the wheel of the automobile at the scene of the collision, and she was not behind the wheel. Bob continues to believe that Cathy is lying, even though Brenda thinks this.

Brenda had enough and confronted Bob after he had blanked Cathy in the village on Wednesday, January 17. She reminded him that Cathy is still a kid and asked him to take responsibility for his actions.

She begged him to understand that girl needed her father.

Bob visited Brenda and Eric Pollard’s (Chris Chittell) home, where Cathy has been residing since the accident, a short while later to speak with his daughter, suggesting that her remarks had an impact.

Cathy was nearly done drafting her eulogy at the funeral ceremony. Bob acknowledged that he had hardly begun writing since his words always seemed to come out incorrectly when he attempted to write.

After Cathy and Eric produced some tea, Brenda asked him to sit with her, and it seemed like Bob was beginning to warm up to his daughter.

Heath detested hymns, therefore they both decided that there would be none during the burial.

Bob requested that Sam Fender’s song “Getting Started” be played. He said Heath had performed it on his guitar often.

Cathy’s attitude shifted. That music, she said, wasn’t one she liked and didn’t want to hear. Bob questioned her, thinking she was being gloomy or self-centered, rather than asking her why, asking instead, “Why does everything have to be about you?”

Bob rushed away, refusing to listen to her attempts to explain that it wasn’t just her being gloomy. Cathy was left to tell Brenda the heartbreaking reason why she couldn’t bear to hear that specific song at the funeral.

She said that when they crashed, it was playing in the vehicle. That song, sung “at the top of his voice,” was the last thing she remembered her brother doing.

After Cathy had left for her room, Brenda called Pollard, “What an absolute mess,” wondering how the family would handle the burial.
