Recently, Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) in Emmerdale had her whole world flipped upside down when Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson) disclosed that he had discovered a lump in her breast.
It was expected that Chas would spend some time in denial after Liam’s finding, because Faith (Sally Dexter) passed away after her own cancer diagnosis. In this new video, Liam says he pushed Chas to get checked out and that he won’t tell anybody, but in the meanwhile, she gets a call from him confirming an appointment.
Liam stops by the back area of the tavern to see Chas. She informs him of the meeting, but she can’t help but wonder whether the brief contact from him earlier may indicate anything concerning.
An encouraging Liam responds that they may want to let Chas know as soon as possible, but he becomes shocked when she asks him to accompany her.
When Chas learns that Liam is really taking the day off, she is moved by his decision to spend time with her. Liam says he is more than willing to accompany her.
What will Chas’s findings be during the appointment, though?
And will she have the guts to tell her family what she’s experiencing?
In her discussion of this new story, producer Kate Brooks clarified:
We knew immediately when this topic was presented how crucial it was to investigate this. We wanted to highlight the effects on not just Chas but also her immediate family because of her strong character and the fact that her family has a history of breast cancer. Chas is, after all, the cornerstone of the Dingles.
“We knew Lucy Pargeter was the perfect character to play this with because of her natural ability to highlight Chas’s vulnerabilities beneath her toughened exterior.”
We chose to work with Breast Cancer Now because we wanted to tell this story as truthfully as we could. Hopefully, raising awareness of this illness and encouraging individuals to regularly inspect their breasts will result in more favourable results.
