After eventually leaving her violent marriage to Nish Panesar (Navin Chowdhry) in EastEnders, Suki Panesar (Balvinder Sopal) is eager to go on with her life, but he won’t make it simple for her.
Since Suki left him, Nish has always been domineering, and in recent scenes, he exposed her as a homosexual to the Giani from their Gurdwara, only to show that he is still in charge.
Suki has only just begun to accept the reality that she is a lesbian after years of struggling with her sexuality.
Suki ultimately acknowledged that she had broken up with Nish, but she couldn’t bring herself to tell her why or introduce Eve Unwin (Heather Peace) as her girlfriend. Instead, she decided to talk about their divorce with a mediator after running into her old friend Barminder.
This also demonstrates that Suki is still working towards self-acceptance and coming out, which makes Nish’s acts even more heinous.
Nish had summoned the Giani, knowing that she would be humiliated by the discourse that followed, so she was taken aback when she showed up to talk about the divorce.
Suki awkwardly said that they had “irreconcilable differences” in response to the Giani’s question about what had gone wrong in their marriage. Suki was devastated to hear Nish reveal that she had fallen in love with another lady.
When he brought up the fact that the Akal Takht had declared that homosexuality was not acceptable only a year before, he further twisted the knife.
The Giani was quick to step in to assist Suki, telling Nish that the Sikhs’ universal purpose was to hate no one. She then assured Suki that the Gurdwara would provide her with lots of support.
After the Giani left, Suki didn’t take long to confront Nish for her unkind actions. She said that she was already humiliated and that she had long since come to believe that her feelings were incorrect and that she would have lost everything if she had given in to them.
She boldly informed Nish that she would be there one day and never look back, explaining how hard she was working to learn to appreciate herself and realise that how she feels and what she wants is alright.
Nish quickly followed Suki out the door, and an enormous argument broke out over what each of them had done to damage the other’s reputation.
Suki advised Nish not to omit the portion of the tale about his effort to have Eve murdered, after Nish threatened to drag her through the courts and out her to everyone in their town in the process.
Nish countered that Suki had nothing before they met and that he was going to rob her of everything and leave her in ruins.
But Suki surprised him by surprising him with her strength and her three-word challenge, “Bring it on.”
Will Nish be able to ruin Suki, or will he ultimately face his retribution?
