Emmerdale on Tuesday, January 30, depicted the events that followed Chas Dingle’s (Lucy Pargeter) announcement to her family that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer.
After learning the news, Aaron (Danny Miller) just left the Woolpack, ignoring Chas’s entreaties to stay around. When it became apparent that Aaron intended to leave the community, Chas was saddened. Emma Atkins’ character Charity shut down the bar so she could have a conversation with Chas about the situation. “He doesn’t care if I survive or not,” Chas bemoaned.
She said that despite being surrounded by loving family members, she had never felt more alone in her life.
In the meanwhile, Mackenzie (played by Lawrence Robb) decided to follow up with Aaron in an attempt to persuade him to change his ways.
‘Sense’ and Mackenzie don’t usually go together, but Aaron had created such a mess of his own life that Mackenzie was exactly the ideal person to reach out to. Aaron did not waste any time in pointing out that he had favoured Charity above his son Reuben.
Mack said that Aaron would hate himself if he left Chas and that he hated himself for losing Reuben.
Aaron eventually began to open up and discussed his sister Liv (Isobel Steele). He had shared a few minutes with her just before to her death from her wounds sustained after being crushed by a caravan during a violent storm. He felt guilty for not telling her how much he loved her and saying more.
To hear her laugh, he promised Mack he would do everything to spend more time with her. Without her, he argued, he wouldn’t have a life.
Nor was it limited to Liv. He discussed his past relationships with Ben Tucker (Simon Lennon), who was murdered by Meena Jutla (Paige Sandhu), and Jackson Walsh (Marc Silcock), his previous partner whom he had assisted in his death, as well as his spouse and greatest love Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley). And about his grandmother, Faith Dingle (Sally Dexter), who passed away in 2022 from cancer.
“Everyone I’ve ever loved, including Jackson, Robert, Ben, Gran, and Liv, are all just ghosts that haunt me endlessly,” he murmured. Although Robert isn’t really a ghost, we’ll overlook it because he is incarcerated.
Because Aaron’s inability to cope with any more loss is at the root of his cold, heartless behaviour. He admitted to Mackenzie that he couldn’t handle another funeral. “They cannot harm you if you are alone.”
It looked that he had made up his mind since he hopped into a cab and left Mack by the side of the road. When he got home, he informed Charity that Aaron was no longer with him.
However, Chas was alone at the Woolpack, or so she believed. When she turned around, Aaron was inside.
“Mum,” he whispered, and Chas simply collapsed and extended her arms to embrace him, so that was all he had to say. As they gave one other a strong embrace, Chas told her child how much she loved him.
This, hopefully, is the beginning of Aaron rebuilding all the bridges he’s attempted to destroy in the village. It was a touching conclusion to what had been a very sad episode.
