In Coronation Street, comedian Helen Lederer plays Ken Barlow’s new love interest, and all she can think about is Bill Roache.
On film, during a singles cocktail night at the Chariot Square Hotel, Ken will demonstrate that he still has what it takes to win over women when he captures the eye of Helen’s character Elspeth.
Helen, 65, believes Bill, 91, is avoiding the cameras just as much. “I understand Elspeth’s interest in him—he’s a true silver fox with extremely chiselled cheekbones,” the woman remarked.
On March 27, the next week, Elspeth brings beverages for Ken and his son-in-law, Steve. Steve is devastated to learn that his father-in-law has fallen in love with a beautiful woman while he hasn’t met anyone, and Elspeth is invited to accompany them. When asked how she got the job offer for the ITV soap opera, Helen stated it was “out of the blue.”
“It’s even more exciting to be offered a part playing opposite William Roache,” the actress stated. He was a very nice and affable man that I had first met when I was seated next to him at an event. It was therefore a pleasure to be awarded this small role.”
As Bill works through his financial issues away from the cobbles, a new plot develops. Three months were granted to him last week to pay off a tax deficit with HMRC in order to “allow for the sale of property.”
Attorneys said that payments made had resulted in a reduction of the amount he owes, which was not revealed in court. In 2020, his character Ken had a romantic relationship with Claudia Colby (Rula Lenska) and was famously married to Deirdre (the late Anne Kirkbride) twice.
Helen has had a varied career, having performed stand-up and had parts in television programmes including Absolutely Fabulous. Her first husband, Roger Alton, was a journalist and the former editor of The Observer. Together, they had a daughter named Hannah Lederer-Alton. The GP Chris Browne is her second husband.
“I do indeed but as I’m older now I recognise it for what it is so I try and put them in a compartment and tell myself it is OK,” she said when asked if she had experienced jitters on the cobbles. I talked myself out of it.
“I got a tourist-style photo shot because I was so pleased to see ‘Coronation Street’ on the side of the building on a very rainy day up in Manchester. I was taken aback by how wonderful everyone was and how at ease they made me feel.
“Everyone was incredibly kind from the beginning. They were simply incredibly amiable. The day kept getting better and better when I met Amy Robbins, who plays Christina Boyd, and we shared a dressing room.
She explained that Elspeth is a very outgoing person, which is why Ken is drawn to her nature.
“She is a person who doesn’t mind getting her hair done, applying lipstick, getting her nails done, pulling the velvet-draped dress over her slightly voluptuous figure and sitting at the bar by herself with an open mind and heart.” She speaks to people and is brave and proud to be there by herself.” If Ken and Elspeth click, Helen mentioned that a longer stay on the show would be conceivable.
“Definitely” is the response to that, the speaker stated. Though he had to deal with Steve, Ken was clearly drawn to her. Who knows, maybe he got her number? He might really call her one day, in which case I could return to Weatherfield.
