This week’s events paralleled a famous episode from history.
Fans of EastEnders have drawn comparisons between a scene that aired this week and one that starred Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) in 2007. In the episodes that aired more than 16 years apart, the brash character is caught up in another cheating controversy and repeats the same statement.
It’s no surprise that Stacey has been engaged with both of the Branning brothers’ affairs—there have been several affairs on Albert Square over the years, and it’s safe to say that they’ve been involved in quite a number. On Christmas Day 2007, a video featuring Max Branning (Jake Wood) and Stacey—who was dating Max’s son Bradley (Charlie Clements)—was shown to Tanya (Jo Joyner).
The devastating discovery in the cult classic episode tore the Branning family apart, and Stacey quietly apologized once everything was revealed. After more than 16 years, she says the same two things when she is discovered with Jack Branning (Scott Maslen).
Jack and Stacey bonded over their shared grandchild and have since been having an affair. This week, Stacey made the decision to end their relationship after realizing the effect her adultery will have on Denise Fox (Diane Parish).
But Martin Fowler (James Bye) intercepted her as she was giving Jack one last kiss. Watchers had déjà vu when Stacey sat on the couch and repeated her “I’m sorry” statement in an intense episode that aired on Wednesday, March 20.
“A slater never changes its leopard spots,” a viewer said on X. Another said, “I love the fact EE added that in and took us back to a time in tv history!”
“Christmas 2007 was literally all I thought about while watching these scenes!” said a different viewer. In the square, it appears as though history is being repeated.
