The Emmerdale couple Matty Barton (Ash Palmisciano) and Amy Wyatt (Natalie Ann Jamieson) have experienced highs and lows in their relationship, but they are now content and feeling settled. They are also eagerly preparing for their impending nuptials.
They decide to get married at the Village Hall, and with Suzy Merton (Martelle Edinborough), their wedding planner, handling every aspect, what could go wrong?
When the vicar’s mother, Claudette Anderson (Flo Wilson), chooses to become engaged, it becomes clear that the question is not “what,” but rather “who.”
Claudette is renowned for her morality, uprightness, and steadfast devotion to Christianity. When Nicola King (Nicola Wheeler) proposed ideas for the Christmas fair, she became very upset since they were too secular and modern for her liking.
Although those events were primarily staged for laughs, she has valid concerns about Matty and Amy getting married at the Village Hall, which are unsettling and serious. It’s because Matty’s transgender identity was recently revealed to Claudette. She declares that since the hall is church property, it would be improper for them to utilize it.
For Matty, the fact that he is transgender is a sensitive subject that rarely comes up in the village, and encountering attitudes that are transphobic is hurtful.
Upon making his debut in 2018, Matty became the first transgender character in Emmerdale history. Initially, Ash Palmisciano served as a story consultant. His enthusiasm and expertise so pleased the casting director that she urged him to audition, and he got the role.
“When I was growing up, there was no transgender person on screen,” he remarked. I’m getting to play a role that, when I was younger, I really needed to see. I hope that the general public’s perceptions have shifted.

Suzy suggests that she can find a different location fast in an attempt to help Matty and Amy out of a sticky situation, but Matty doesn’t see the sense in that. He claims that instead of serving as a transgender role model for others, he wanted to enjoy his wedding as himself.
A small-scale wedding would be preferable to his being thrust into the spotlight unnecessarily.
Amy respects his desire to go her own way, but she can’t help but feel let down that she and Matty won’t be able to have the dream wedding because of Claudette’s prejudice.
