Coronation Street ‘lining up Toyah stillborn baby plot after her 2001 assault’

Reports suggest Toyah will fear her baby secret being exposed in upcoming scenes

According to reports, Coronation Street is planning a fresh storyline for Toyah Battersby. The idea to revisit Toyah’s 2001 rape on the soap opera has already drawn criticism from a number of quarters.

Viewers of the contentious narrative will reportedly discover that Toyah’s assault resulted in the death of her unborn child.

Retelling such large-scale tales is not always a popular choice. And in response to the claims, supporters are already lacking enthusiasm on social media.

Coronation Street ‘planning baby plot for Toyah’

After giving delivery, Toyah reportedly buried the child in a park. Toyah is afraid of what could happen if her secret is revealed as the ground is being dug up.

The Sun was informed by a source that, “this is still an extremely dark and ambitious storyline, and some longtime fans may decide to pick apart the holes.” The source said that viewers desire entertainment.

The vicious assault and its aftermath were all shown on film, thus it has raised some concerns on set that she later fell pregnant after the rape, had a miscarriage on her own, and buried her deceased child at The Red Rec.

“It won’t be well received.”

Fans react

In fact, Corrie fans have already voiced their dissatisfaction on social media in response to the accusations. Some have suggested that, with the programme already in decline, this is the last straw for them. If the story moves forward, they are prepared to disconnect.

One said, “I’m not sure if it’s true or not, but really, can’t they give Toyah a happy storyline for once?”

“I have watched Coronation Street my entire life,” another person said. I was watching Corrie, while everyone else was watching That’s So Raven or anything else suitable for their age. However, I truly believe it would be the final straw for me if they go with that Toyah plot.

“Coronation Street is about to end if this is accurate! Another said, “There’s so much crap on it now anyhow, this will finish it.”

Another commenter said, “I’m utterly repulsed by a Coronation Street teaser that suggests Toyah buried a stillborn child after her 2001 rape. I can’t even express myself. This show has devolved into an abhorrent justification. I’m afraid it has to be cut, and I’m so done with it.

Coronation Street has been contacted by Entertainment Daily for a statement about this article.

Toyah Battersby’s rape in Coronation Street

A night out in April 2021 resulted in Toyah being raped and assaulted. At the time, Coronation Street faced criticism for attempting to match EastEnders’ nasty tales with its own, and it was the first time the show had broadcast a rape.

After spending the evening with mechanic Sam, Toyah was strolling up the ginnel to her home by herself. Before Toyah was assaulted, she heard someone shout her name, and there was a fight and a muffled cry.

Jason Grimshaw discovered her laying in the ginnel. The police and a doctor were summoned when he brought her home.

Who raped Toyah in Coronation Street?

Toyah was unable to recall much, although at first, Jason was the main suspect. After all of the guys on the street provided DNA evidence, Duggie Ferguson, the manager of Rovers, was cleared of any involvement.

But Peter Barlow declined to provide his DNA, leading to his detention on rape-related charges.

But Toyah’s assailant turned out to be Phil Simmonds, whom she had gotten to know after Duggie kicked him out. Jack Deam, who later starred in Clocking off, Doctors, DCI Banks, Shameless, and Life on Mars, as Phil.

Through all of this, Phil had been a huge help to her, but as he called her name, something snapped and she remembered his voice.

He grabbed her as she attempted to flee. Peter, on the other hand, heard the disturbance and came to her aid. DNA evidence established Phil’s identity even though he disputed the rape accusations.

When Toyah paid him a visit in August 2001 at Strangeways Jail, he eventually acknowledged having raped her.

Georgia Taylor felt rape story was ‘in questionable taste’

Since then, Toyah’s actress Georgia Taylor has acknowledged that she’s unsure about the path the plot followed.

She said, “I felt privileged to be given the story and wanted to prove myself,” in a 2022 interview with Radio Times.

However, they created a “whodunit” by concealing the rapist’s identity. That was in poor taste, and to be honest, I doubt they would do it today, but things change, especially when they happen more than 20 years ago.

“There was controversy, but it was reassuring that people were supportive of the job I performed and that I got some nice accolades.

“Perhaps in some way that made it easier for me to leave and try other things a year or so later.”
