In Coronation Street, Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove) soon has the shock of her life when she meets Denny, the father of Paul (Peter Ash) and Gemma (Dolly-Rose Campbell).

This comes at an awkward time since Bernie is now helping to care for Paul, who has motor neurone illness.

Paul will have a welcome diversion from his sickness in future episodes as he gets ready for a radio appearance with Amy (Elle Mulvaney).

Paul speaks strongly about his MND and society’s overall disregard for people with disabilities as soon as the conversation starts. But he goes a little too far and ends up cursing live on television!

Subsequently in the week, a guy approaches Bernie outside the café, stating he was unaware of his son’s death until he heard Paul on the radio.

Bernie pretends not to notice her horror before stating that Paul has passed away and that the interview was recorded. Denny follows her up to the apartment, where Gemma and Paul are astonished to see their father, and he is met with astonishment.

Billy (Daniel Brocklebank) tells Paul that his dad used to strike him when he was younger while Bernie, who is also upset by a secret from her past, vents to Dev (Jimmi Harkishin) about her ex.

When Billy and Paul settle down to watch a movie together, Billy is obliged to leave Denny alone even though he is certain that he cannot be trusted.

Denny runs into Gemma on his way out for ice cream and is excited to see his grandkids.

When Paul is alone himself in the apartment, he strains to breathe and has a coughing attack. When the operator answers his call for an ambulance, Paul hangs up.

When Denny comes back, he finds Paul barely awake, which shocks him. But what will the people who care about Paul think of this unexpected development?

Does Denny no longer deserve our confidence, or has he changed?
