On Friday, April 26, BBC One aired the season finale of Beyond Paradise. However, viewers quickly saw a “cheeky” jab at Coronation Street.
Supporters of Beyond Paradise were quick to criticise the BBC for using a character from ITV’s Coronation Street. The little aside occurred during the Death in Paradise spin-off’s season finale.
The second season of the crime-drama series aired on Friday, April 26, with the engagement of Kris Marshall’s character Humphrey Goodman and Sally Bretton’s character Martha Lloyd being postponed. The Shipton Abbott team also looked into a theft at a museum and dealt with evil cybercriminals.
But when a possible offender was shown to resemble Coronation Street veteran Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne), viewers were “surprised”. Upon his arrival, Dylan Llewellyn’s character, PC Kelby Hartford, declared he had made a “breakthrough” in Chief Superintendent Charlie Woods’ (Jade Harrison) character.
He started, “A woman in the next street saw a car parked outside her house.” “She didn’t answer the door when someone knocked, and her Wi-Fi has been acting strangely.”
The reason the automobile was relevant to the story, Kelby said when DS Esther Williams (Zara Ahmadi) questioned him, was that “someone who looked like Peter Barlow drove it off.” Esther gave Kelby a puzzled look and then inquired as to the man’s identity.
The PC merely replied, “Coronation Street?” in return. Fans were quick to take to social media to share their thoughts after the playful exchange.
There are a lot of Corrie references tonight, so one fan remarked on X, which was once known as Twitter: “#beyondparadise.”
“I was genuinely shocked that a BBC show would be discussing Coronation Street, but then realised that since they’re searching for a villain, it’s just very cheeky shade,” another person wrote.
Another person said, “Please tell me that the person who plays the criminal when he gets captured will be someone who was on Coronation Street #BeyondParadise.”
“I’m going to be disappointed if Chris Gascoyne doesn’t turn up in this episode,” remarked a fourth fan.
Another person stated, “They ought to have cast the real Peter Barlow actor.” “Since leaving Corrie, he must be hunting for work, #beyondparadise.”
From 2000 until 2023, Peter Barlow, the son of Ken Barlow (William Roache), starred on Coronation Street on ITV.
Chris, 56, plays Peter, who left the show the previous year after Carla Connor (Alison King) gave him a one-way ticket out of Weatherfield.
In his last moments, he boarded the first tram he could find without bidding his son Simon Barlow (Alex Bain) goodnight.
Speaking to the BBC about his abrupt resignation, Chris stated: “It was upsetting for me to leave the people I work with—and I’m not just talking about the actors. These are all people I’ve known for over half of my life.
The father of three was nominated for several awards during his time on the soap opera, including Best Dramatic Performance at the 2010 British Soap Awards.
