Star of Coronation Street Antony Cotton responded to the show’s BAFTA rejection.
For the second year running, the ITV soap opera was left off of the BAFTA TV Awards nominations this year. It was beaten out by Casualty, EastEnders, and Emmerdale for a slot in the Soap & Continuing Drama category.
Actor Cotton, who starred in Sean Tully, defied expectations and appeared on the BAFTA red carpet this evening (May 12), showing his unwavering support for the serial operas nominated for awards.
“I think I’m looking forward to seeing how our friends in the East End and Yorkshire fare. He responded to questions about his feelings on the snub from Digital Spy and other reporters, saying, “I’ve been coming to these for years – I think it was 25 years ago I came to my first BAFTAs.”
“Well, we’ve experienced enough. It’s great to give some cutlery to someone else for a change, as we have enough in the cupboard.”
The last time Corrie won the prize was in 2022. With seven victories overall, second only to EastEnders, Corrie is the winner of the award most times.
Simply said, being able to catch up with individuals is pleasant. I’ve met Matt Hilton, one of our directors, who also does Emmerdale,” Cotton went on.
“So we’re all part of an extended family and I’ve got friends that are here that I’ve known for donkeys’ years.”
Cotton stated that he is rooting for children’s broadcaster Floella Benjamin tonight, who is receiving the BAFTA Fellowship award in recognition of her “unwavering championing of diversity” and “tireless support of children and young people.”
“Seeing Floella Benjamin tonight makes me very happy. Floella Benjamin is my fave. She and I grew up together. Everybody’s home and life include television, and Floella Benjamin was a constant hero in our home when I was a child,” he said.
