Frontman of Happy Mondays Shaun Ryder says that his wild days are far behind him and that he now gets his thrills from riding his bike and watching his fave TV programme.
Shaun Ryder, the star of Happy Mondays, has said that he has moved beyond his hedonistic lifestyle and now loves to watch Coronation Street and ride his bike.
As the main vocalist of the Britpop group, the 61-year-old singer spent the most of his life performing live and struggled with drug addiction, ranging from crack cocaine to heroin to methamphetamine. But ever since turning forty, he’s become a huge fan of watching Coronation Street while taking lengthy bike rides.
Happy Mondays And Fridays, And Saturdays, And Sundays is his book. He said in an interview with The Sun that he wanted to “get clean” since he had reached 40 and his children were growing older and he didn’t want them to think he was a crazy old man. Riding a bike seemed to be the ideal way for him to overcome his addiction. His passion for wheel jumping has inspired him to pursue a career in bicycle impact.
He went on, “I used to be hooked to crack cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, you name it. I’m now dependent on Coronation Street and riding. Since then, have I had any moments of weakness? Really, I haven’t. Now that they are adolescents, my younger daughters live at home with us and have never known me that way. They don’t recognise that person now, but I haven’t attempted to conceal it—it’s my narrative. I really feel that everything that goes through strengthens you.”
Shaun has been drug-free for 20 years, but during his drug-fueled glory days, he remembered going to the home of Depeche Mode frontman Dave Gahan. However, after using his drug stockpile, he left his LA home. Shaun said that in the 1980s, after spending the whole night partying, they returned to his house. He stated: “Dave pulls out this massive big pot of coke and heroin.”
But Dave informed him he was going to be gone for a little while, which ended up being many hours, and he left Shaun on his own. Shaun turned on the television after treating himself to some of Dave’s narcotics and saw that Dave was being pursued by the police on Sunset Boulevard, with helicopters flying above. Shaun jokes that his sole regret is that he ran away from the home because he was afraid the cops would discover him surrounded by a stash of narcotics.
Dave and Shaun both recovered from drug addiction, but because the Happy Mondays singer was prohibited from entering the country, their paths had never met. In addition to his book, the celebrity, who co-stars with his old friend Bez on Celebrity Gogglebox, is preparing to go on a live Q&A tour and has promised to divulge everything.
