Numerous well-known personalities have been acknowledged on this year’s King’s Birthday Honours list, which was just released.
Simon Le Bon, the main singer of Duran Duran, Rebecca Ferguson, a former contestant on X Factor, Susie Dent of Countdown, and Amy Dowden of Strictly Come Dancing were all given MBEs. “I accept it on behalf of all those who live with Crohn’s disease, and will continue campaigning to raise awareness for and research into this terrible chronic illness,” Amy, an ambassador for Crohn’s and Colitis UK, stated to PA News.
In addition to her roles as Sunita in Coronation Street and Anita in the sitcom Dinnerladies, actress and presenter Shobna Gulati was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire for her contributions to the cultural industries.
Former prime minister Gordon Brown is among the other recipients; he was named a Companion of Honour, and postal campaigner Alan Bates, whose battle to defend sub-postmasters falsely accused of stealing was turned into the ITV series Mr. Bates Vs. The Post Office, was knighted. The former sub-postmaster told the PA News agency, “The time I was asked about the OBE…,” acknowledging that he had previously turned down an OBE accolade. If I had accepted it, I thought it would have offended a lot of the group.
However, I am aware that throughout the years, I have had hundreds of emails and letters of support, and many of them appear to feel that I need to be recognised in some way for the job that I have completed on their behalf or on their behalf. This year’s other beneficiaries include novelist Monica Ali of Brick Lane, who has been granted a CBE for services to writing, historian Niall Ferguson, who was knighted, and Armando Iannucci, who wrote The Thick of It.
