6 Memorable South Asian Storylines of EastEnders

Outstanding South Asian character tales have long been a part of EastEnders. We enumerate six of these tales.

For over four decades, the BBC soap opera EastEnders has been a mainstay of UK television.

Since its 1985 premiere, it has prospered by presenting characters from a variety of backgrounds.

This is one of the most inclusive shows since it accepts people of all ethnicities, sexual orientations, and abilities.

EastEnders has had compelling storylines with well-known South Asian characters ever since it debuted.

These stories are skilfully and sympathetically presented.

DESIblitz highlights the narratives of these personalities in this article.

Come celebrate with us as we proudly showcase six EastEnders South Asian tales.

Syed & Christian

In late 2006, EastEnders acquired a new Executive Producer, Diederick Santer.

Santer’s plans for the show included a desire to make it feel “more 21st century”.

To do this, he introduced more Asian characters.

Among them was the well-known Masood clan. 2009 saw the introduction of the family’s eldest son.

Syed Masood (Marc Elliott) is his name. Syed’s battle to balance his sexuality and religion is one of his main storylines.

Syed falls in love with Christian Clarke (John Partridge) despite being engaged to Amira Shah (Preeya Kalidas).

Syed receives a torrent of hate mail as a result, and he is shunned by both his family and his neighbourhood.

Ultimately, though, he succeeds in winning them over, particularly his mother Zainab Masood (Nina Wadia).

When Marc made the decision to quit the program in 2012, Christian and Syed left as well.

Lorraine Newman, the producer in charge of overseeing the exit, clarified:

“We were faced with a difficult choice when Marc declared he had made the decision to go on.

“After many discussions, with John among them, it was determined that Syed and Christian would only have one outcome.”

Tamwar & Afia

Keeping with the Masood family, we now have Tamwar Masood (Himesh Patel), their middle son.

Despite being awkward, geeky, and socially awkward, Tamwar makes jokes with every sentence he says.

2009 saw the introduction of the character’s love relationship.

Meryl Fernandes’s gregarious, carefree Afia Masood enters Tamwar’s life like a beacon of hope.

Afia and Tamwar fall in love right away, but as is typical in EastEnders, things aren’t meant to go as planned.

It quickly becomes clear that Tamwar’s mother Zainab’s ex-husband, Dr. Yusef Khan (Ace Bhatti), is the father of Afia.

When Zainab had an affair with Masood Ahmed (Nitin Ganatra), Yusef set her on fire.

Afia and Tamwar’s relationship initially suffers as a result, but their families finally approve of their marriage.

But Yusef is adamant about getting Zainab back. He is able to marry Zainab and keep Masood apart via coercive control and manipulation.

Yusef’s abuse and acts of domestic violence against Zainab are intermittent in their marriage.

This comes to a head when Tamwar suffers severe burns and Yusef sets fire to the B&B, ultimately resulting in his death.

Sadly, the subsequent stress was too much for Tamwar and Afia’s marriage to withstand, and Afia moved out of Tamwar in 2012.

Shabnam and Kush’s Stillborn Baby

It is appropriate to mention the Masood family’s daughter in addition to their sons.

In 2014, Rakhee Thakrar took up the character of Shabnam Masood, which was previously portrayed by Zahra Ahmadi.

Shabnam fell in love with market merchant Kush Kazemi (Davood Ghadami) towards the end of that year.

She finds out she is expecting Kush’s child, but the pair is about to receive heartbreaking news.

Shabnam tragically gives birth to a stillborn son after the baby passes away while still inside her.

The stillbirth is one of the most tragic yet impactful plots in EastEnders, and the infant is called Zaair.

Examining the plot, Rakhee states:

“We feel a great responsibility to convey the truth about stillbirth, as it is an experience that profoundly and permanently alters a person’s life.”

“We want to encourage people to talk about their experiences and their deceased babies,” the statement reads.

When Shabnam finds out that Kush fathered a boy with her friend Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner), their later marriage to Kush takes a bad turn.

Shabnam isn’t sure that Kush is the real father, even if he gives Stacey’s partner Martin Fowler (James Bye) the impression that he is for a time.

In the end, Shabnam decides to let go of Kush and she and her daughter Jade (Amaya Edward) take the famous black taxi out.

Suki & Eve

Balvinder Sopal debuted on EastEnders in January 2020, as Suki, the strong mother of the Panesar family.

At first, Suki Panesar is presented as straight. This leads to a tense relationship between her and her bisexual daughter Ashneet “Ash” Panesar (Gurlaine Kaur Garcha), because of her stringent ideals.

However, it soon comes to light that Suki also has feelings for women.

This is seen when she tries to kiss Emma Barton’s character, Honey Mitchell, before falling in love with Heather Peace’s character, Eve Unwin.

Suki and Eve, who fans have dubbed “Sukeve,” have a fiery and passionate connection that has made them one of the show’s most popular couples.

But when Nishandeep “Nish” Panesar (Navin Chowdhry), Suki’s domineering and violent husband, shows around, everything threatens to come apart for them.

When Nish learns of Suki’s romance with Eve, he loses it and gives his son Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara) the order to murder Eve.

Eve quickly makes her way back to Suki, but Ravi gives up and lets her go since he can’t handle this.

Suki’s divorce from Nish was finalised in 2024, allowing her to freely carry on her cherished connection with Eve.

It makes sense that this plot is among the best the program has to offer, with excellent writing and gifted performers at the core of the narrative.

The Six

“The Six” is the one plot that, over the course of its existence, genuinely kept audiences interested.

A flash-forward scene from February 2023 included six female characters standing over a man body in the Queen Vic tavern.

Letitia Dean’s character Sharon Watts kneels next to him, feels his pulse, and discovers cufflinks on his sleeve.

“He is dead,” she murmurs.

Watching in terror are Suki, Stacey, Kathy Cotton (Gillian Taylforth), Linda Carter (Kellie Bright), and Denise Fox (Diane Parish).

This scene set the stage for an intriguing, convoluted, and gripping plot that left viewers wondering for the next ten months.

Cufflinks played a significant role in the show’s symbology, and suspects were eventually exposed along with intermittent hints.

Energised conversations and arguments over EastEnders erupted on forums, social media platforms, and blogs.

Eventually, all became clear on Christmas Day 2023. Nish found himself surrounded by ladies in the Vic.

Denise struck him in the head with a bottle when he attempted to drag Suki away with force.

Remarkably, Nish was not the dead guy even though he was the body from the scene from the flash forward when he fell.

It revealed out that the person who entered the tavern and attempted to choke Sharon was Keanu Taylor, played by Danny Walters.

Linda stabbed Keanu to death with a meat thermometer in a last-ditch effort to save Sharon.

The ladies promised to defend one another, which unexpectedly brought them together in a way that changed their lives.

Suki, a well-known South Asian character, was a welcome addition to such an engaging narrative.

It emphasises the variety for which EastEnders is renowned once more.

Nugget’s Steroids

The last Ravi Gulati is the father of Priya Nandra-Hart’s (Sophie Khan Levy) kid.

He is none other than Joshua Rasul Choudhury, aka Davinder “Nugget” Gulati.

After witnessing his buddy Denzel Danes (Jaden Ladega) bulk up after using steroids, Nugget, a misbehaving teenager, approaches him for the medication.

But Nugget is in for a catastrophe when he passes out from renal failure brought on by the steroids.

It was discovered in July 2024 that Nugget could require dialysis for the remainder of his life due to the event.

After that, Denzel was taken into custody for giving illicit drugs to a child.

The BBC stated the following when they revealed the steroid plot:

“The plot will trace Denzel’s and those around him’s experience when he is introduced to steroids, emphasising the impact that social media has on his perception of his body image and the subsequent effects on his relationships and mental health.”

In addition, Nugget vowed to inform everyone that Nish had kissed Priya when he came up from anaesthesia, demonstrating his Panesar/Gulati intimidating tendencies.

Via these storylines, EastEnders has proven that its South Asian characters are not just there to tick boxes.

In these stories, these characters shine with glory, showcasing their strength and essentialism to the show.

Versatile actors portray them which makes these plots all the more entertaining and gripping.

So, if you’re a soap lover, go ahead and embrace all the glory that these EastEnders storylines have to offer.
