“She’s left very poorly.”
For the first time, Rob Mallard and Lucy Fallon of Coronation Street have discussed their significant new plot.
The ITV soap opera’s new issue-based narrative will feature poignant sequences starring the characters of Bethany Platt and Daniel Osbourne this month.
It was disclosed last month that Bethany, who has become anxious about her appearance, is going to have cosmetic surgery overseas.
The surgery will go awry, resulting in a dangerous infection that leaves Bethany in the ICU barely alive.
Rob and Lucy discussed the impending storyline in an exclusive interview with Digital Spy while walking the red carpet at the National Television Awards last week.
Lucy said to us, “Bethany has some cosmetic surgery done, but it doesn’t go well and she ends up looking really bad. Daniel comes to the rescue.
“Before this, Bethany was experiencing feelings of insecurity, which undoubtedly contributed to her actions.
“I believe that her anxieties about Daniel and his ex-girlfriend Daisy have somewhat fuelled her fears. Having access to current events is always beneficial.
“After that, it’s the consequences of Bethany’s choice and how that affects everyone, as well as Bethany’s perception of herself and whether she finds herself attractive,” Rob went on.
“Bethany is concerned about Daniel’s opinion of her beauty. Thus, it incorporates all of things into the partnership.”
Rob said, “They seem to be the storylines that catch fire the most,” in reference to taking on such a serious plot. Although it’s not something you always want to do, issue-based drama seems to be what people truly like seeing.”
Fans of Corrie will see the beginning of the narrative this week as Bethany begins to dread the worst after seeing Daniel cuddling Daisy outside the Rovers Return.
Later, Bethany decides to have cosmetic surgery while in Turkey for a paid advertisement she is writing about a facility that offers the treatment.
