The way Amelia Spencer treated Belle Dingle and Tom King in the popular ITV soap opera Emmerdale has quickly drawn criticism from viewers.
Fans of Emmerdale have not wasted any time in criticising Amelia Spencer’s “error,” drawing attention to a neglected plot detail.
The ITV soap opera has only begun to delve into a plot focused on abuse and coercive control involving Belle Dingle (Eden Taylor-Draper) and Tom King (James Chase). Belle boldly left Tom in a recent episode, and the Dingles promised to protect her when she told her family the truth about his abusive actions.
Last week, as suspicions about him grew, nasty Tom took down all the surveillance cameras he had installed at Belle’s house with the intention of spying on her. He insisted on his innocence to his uncle Jimmy King in the interim, labelling Belle’s charges as untrue. Tom lost his job at the veterinary clinic when word of his harsh behaviour spread.
Even though the villain was being opposed by a large number of the villagers, others continued to support Tom in spite of his immorality. Jimmy supported his nephew, insisting he was innocent, and Amelia, who had recently fallen in love, supported Tom even though Belle had warned her about his violent tendencies. After it appeared as though Tom had vanished on Friday, the episode’s conclusion disclosed that everything had been a part of his malicious scheme.
Amelia, who had previously challenged Belle in the hamlet, met up with him on the outside and gave information to a cunning Tom. Amelia had hoped that they would be able to spend time together, but Tom turned her down, telling her that he wanted her to spy on Belle in order to seek a divorce and be with her.
Using social media, fans quickly chastised Amelia for her grave error in choosing Tom, as well as bringing out an overlooked plot detail. Fans of the soap opera will remember that Amelia’s life was miserable due to a guy named Lloyd stalking her. But because there was little proof, no one took it seriously. Eventually, Amelia’s father, Dan Spencer, decided to take matters into his own hands and struck Lloyd fatally; as a result, the man is currently serving an eight-year jail sentence.
Viewers questioned why Belle was believed yet Amelia was not when it came to her own experience of being stalked. Belle did warn her, but she didn’t want to listen, according to one person who wrote: “I mean, she was stalked and harassed herself like she has no compassion at all for belle.” Another person added: “To be fair, Belle’s already tried to warn her & sorry but come on, surely even Amelia must realise the more people come forward tryna warn her the more there must actually be something to it right? She may not believe Belle, but Amy and Kerry are just attempting to keep her safe on Emmerdale.”
