Through Bethany Platt’s character on Coronation Street, the problem of botched cosmetic surgery is being addressed.

In the next plot, Lucy Fallon’s character, following a botched cosmetic surgery overseas, has sepsis that leaves her permanently stoma-ridden.

In the ITV soap opera, Bethany chooses to get liposuction at a clinic after accepting a position to write an advertisement for a cosmetic surgery firm about their new facility in Turkey.

She did not disclose the operation on her travel insurance, so her family will need to figure out how to collect money after the treatment to have her freed.

“I was happy that they trusted me with it because it’s an important storyline and, of course, I really enjoy doing issue-based storylines,” actress Lucy Fallon stated when she first learnt about the project.

“This is undoubtedly really intense, which is thrilling for an actor, but since this actually occurs to real people, there is a great deal of pressure to do well.

The plot is also quite significant since there are a tonne of terrifying tales online about individuals discussing their experiences having cosmetic surgery performed in other countries.

“I sincerely hope that this plot will cause people to reconsider travelling overseas for cosmetic surgery.”

Following an operation that results in a permanent stoma for Bethany, the British soap opera has been closely collaborating with the charity Colostomy UK on the plot.

“We’re really excited that one of the UK’s most loved TV shows is going to feature a major character living with a stoma,” stated Giovanni Cinque of Colostomy UK.

“Although a number of celebrities have disclosed that they have undergone surgery, public awareness has increased significantly over the past few years. However, the difficulties faced by the 200,000+ people in the UK who have stomas are not as well known.”

She went on to remark, “It indicates that we, as a society and as people, are not as cognisant of the decisions that we can make to enhance their quality of life in a good way.

“We sincerely believe that Bethany’s journey will significantly contribute to audience education and, ultimately, to the development of a more Stoma Aware UK.

“We’ve enjoyed working on this story with the Coronation Street behind-the-scenes teams as well.”

According to the Colostomy UK website, a stoma is a hole surgically made on the surface of the abdomen to redirect the passage of urine or excrement.

A colostomy is a procedure where one end of the colon is redirected via a stomach hole.
