The next phase in Sonia Fowler’s (Natalie Cassidy) and Reiss Colwell’s (Jonny Freeman) journey to become parents through infertility is rapidly approaching in EastEnders.

As viewers are aware, Reiss shocked Sonia by proposing that they have a child together back in the summer.

The relationship had previously been on the rocks because Reiss believed Sonia had cheated on him after discovering a pregnancy test in her bag and realising he was sterile.

He even said she had an affair with James Farrar’s Zack Hudson.

But in less than a day, Reiss had produced pamphlets outlining the options and asked Sonia to try for a child with him through IVF.

Since then, everything has been up and down. Before they had even left Albert Square for their first appointment, there was a fight because Sonia was getting sick of Reiss’ controlling attitude.

After Sonia had her “trigger shot,” the pair quickly got back on track, and she only had to wait 36 hours to get her eggs back.

However, Sonia’s hopes for a romantic evening, complete with rose petals, were dashed when she received word from the hospital that Reiss’s wife Debbie, who requires round-the-clock care due to a severe stroke, was critically ill with pneumonia.

The incidents even forced Sonia to admit to Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) that there were moments when she thought it would be best for everyone if Debbie simply vanished.

Sonia acknowledged that she felt as though Debbie was always watching over them.

Sonia mentioned that she thought Reiss wouldn’t want to carry on with the baby-hunting if Debbie did pass away, so Kathy quickly consoled her.

Nonetheless, the couple is feeling optimistic about their IVF experience this Christmas.

They discuss the embryo transfer phase of treatment with much excitement.
