As 2024 gets underway, Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty), who has been raising a small child named Ashton with her lover Zack Hudson (James Farrar), is going to have a difficult time.
Whit and Zack, who lost their infant daughter Peach to Edwards syndrome, were ecstatic to be approved as foster parents.
Zack was horrified by Whitney’s choice to end her pregnancy, saying she just couldn’t put her body through it.
However, Zack finds it difficult to get close to Ashton, and just before she departs, Whit gets devastating news that forces her to make a big choice.
Zack drowns his sorrows at Peggy’s with Martin Fowler (James Bye) when the couple had to inform Ashton that he must relocate to a new foster family.
At their modest New Year’s Eve party, Natalie Cassidy’s character Sonia Fowler tries to console a broken-hearted Whit, but her attempts are unsuccessful.
Whit then finds out some startling information.
The following day, she shares the news to Zack, and they are still talking about it when the social worker comes to pick Ashton up.
Whitney and Zack had come a long way; they even moved out of No. 1 and into their own flat so they could foster, much to the dismay of their closest friend Chelsea Fox (Zaraah Abrahams).
Whit visits Peach’s tree for a heart-to-heart with Yolande Trueman (Angela Wynter), struggling with the unexpected news and having to let Ashton go. After making a choice, Whit returns to number 3B to tell Zack.
Given that actor Shona McGarty left EastEnders after 15 years, and Whitney is scheduled to depart the show in 2024, what news will Whitney get and will it cause her to leave the Square?
