Coronation Street viewers fume over Paul Foreman blunder as they call out ‘disability issues’

Coronation Street fans were left puzzled after Paul, Bernie and Gemma headed out on a trip together and their vehicle got stuck in mud, but Paul’s wheelchair remained unscathed

Fans of Coronation Street are perplexed after seeing scenes with Paul Foreman, a wheelchair-bound patient suffering from motor neurone illness.

The ITV soap opera’s episode from Tuesday, January 23, had Paul (Peter Ash) travelling with his mother Bernie (Jane Hazelgrove) and sister Gemma (Dolly-Rose Campbell). The three left Weatherfield in a caravan, but Bernie was able to get them lost, so they were soon forced to turn around.

The family was trapped since they were without phone service, instructions, or a working vehicle because their car had got stuck in some muck.

ITV viewers were perplexed when they saw Paul in his wheelchair outside the caravan; it seemed that the mud had not impacted it.

Several others questioned the images on social media, with one person writing: “So @itvcorrie if the camper van is stuck in the middle then how come Paul’s wheelchair isn’t stuck as well.”

“Paul should be inside the van before he gets stuck in the mud,” a second tweeter asked.

There seemed to be just one little door on the car, and others wondered how Paul had gotten in and out. “How the heck did they fit Paul’s wheelchair through that little door on the camper van?” someone asked in a remark.

“How in the name of disability is Paul getting in and out of that c**p waggon?” said another admirer. while another said: “I felt that the drama of the whole MND plot was completely undermined by the many handicap access concerns with Paul (a wheelchair user) in a camper van on #Corrie. The lack of consultation about these matters with handicapped individuals is really irritating.

The scenes are a prelude to Paul’s departure from Corrie later this year, which will mark the dramatic climax of his tale about motor neurone illness.

The actor Peter spoke to The Mirror and other media outlets about his impending departure, describing it as a sad time for him.

He revealed: “We’ve planned this very significant plot for you, which will be amazing to do, but it will entail a departure eventually. I was brought into the producer’s office late last year. Naturally, my emotions were conflicted. I’ll be sorry to go from the performance.

“It’s an amazing job, I’ve met fantastic people,” Peter said. While I’ll be sorry to leave, I’m also glad to be a part of such a compelling plot that should raise awareness of it. It has two sharp edges.
