Was Ed responsible? (Picture: ITV)

In the Coronation Street episode airing on Wednesday, January 23, Ryan Russell’s character Michael Bailey was caught in a fire, endangering his life.

After it was revealed that Michael’s father, Ed (Trevor Michael Georges), had relapsed and resumed his gambling, he had been living with Dee-Dee (Channique Sterling-Brown).

This week, Ed’s situation took a turn for the worse when bailiffs showed up at the Bailey home and demanded money or personal items in order to settle Ed’s obligations.

This evening, Ed informed Dee-Dee that Gary (Mikey North) is considering purchasing the yard, so he will soon be back on his feet.

But regrettably, Gary confronted Ed and informed him that he would not be following through on their agreement.

When Ed was at his lowest, he made the decision to sleep in the garden after learning from his buddy that he was not allowed to have a spare room at his home.

Michael was startled, believing Ed was imprisoned inside (ITV photo).

Michael saw the building was on fire a few hours later when he happened to stroll by.

Michael dashed in, thinking his dad was inside, only to find himself trapped as the flames became worse.

Ed was terrified to find flames and smoke streaming from the garden when he returned, as it turned out, since he had just gone outside for some supper.

Ed saw someone yelling from inside as Damon (Ciaran Griffiths) assisted him.

Ed ran up the stairs, smashed in the door, and saw Michael inside.

Thankfully, Michael was found to have just inhaled smoke and was well after being examined at the hospital. Father and son were horrified throughout the experience, but Michael felt he could return home since Ed was his hero.

Back at the Baileys, Ed didn’t know that Craig (Colson Smith) had told DS Swain (Vicky Myers) about his worries, even as he spoke to Dee-Dee about how he could finally see a path ahead.

Given Ed’s history of gambling addiction and the building’s eerie atmosphere, Craig couldn’t help but wonder whether the fire was caused by a shady insurance claim.

But did Ed’s actions endanger Michael’s life, and if so, what will be the repercussions for him?

Or was it just an error?
