Coronation Street star Bill Roache defends changes to soap and darker storylines

The soap icon addresses the state of the show.

Legendary cast member Bill Roache has defended the ITV1 soap opera for pursuing darker plotlines.

Some of the dirtiest stories the soap opera has told in years include Roy Cropper becoming entangled in a potential murder inquiry, the continuous scheme involving bullying at school, and mobster Harvey Gaskell attempting to assassinate Sarah and Bethany Platt.

A fan who had quit watching Coronation Street contacted original cast member Bill about these alterations on the celebrity messaging app Cameo (via The Mirror).

“A show like Coronation Street is so well-established and it has its phases,” he said.

“Coronation Street is known for its humor, but there are moments when there is a lot of serious material and other things of that nature. There will be times, sometimes lengthy ones, when the show leans more toward drama, but that will shift as well. That kind of thing happens, and I know a lot of people give up on Coronation Street.

Bill also mentioned Coronation Street’s longevity of over 60 years, citing its ongoing adaptation to the times in which it airs.

“It would have become a dinosaur and passed away by now if it had stayed the same. To draw in the young, it must be an organic process, a living thing, he said.

It’s similar to cake in that it appeals to all age groups, including the young, middle-aged, and elderly. Such stages will occur, and occasionally it will veer slightly to accommodate the influx of youth, which the elderly find objectionable.

“It’s a tricky thing overall, though the audience remains fairly constant; sometimes it lurches to bringing in all the oldies, which the younger generation may not like.” We seem to be doing fairly well, therefore I believe they are doing a great job navigating Coronation Street, long may that continue.”

More sinister plots are planned by the creators, one of which involves Leanne Battersby perhaps falling under the influence of a charismatic cult leader.
