Coronation Street viewers ‘work out’ Carla Connor’s ‘devastating’ Christmas ending

Peter Barlow of Coronation Street will be leaving Weatherfield on Boxing Day. He had trouble adjusting after killing Stephen Reid by mistake.

Before Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) leaves Coronation Street, viewers have claimed to have figured out what Carla Connor (played by Alison King) would send him for Christmas. Following the deeds of fraudster and serial killer Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce), Peter and Carla have experienced a difficult year.

Since Stephen’s passing, Peter has been fighting to abstain from alcohol and has been to more AA meetings, believing that he should have died differently. In addition, Carla’s desperation to salvage the factory has prevented her from giving Peter her full attention and the assistance he requires.

In tonight’s episode, Peter confided in Carla about how he’d been feeling in general and how he thought he would be left with nothing in Weatherfield.

“Seeing you in the factory today, you were born to do that!” he informed her after his AA meeting. How about me? What exactly lights me up with ambition, really?

“Not a thing. With this new liver, I should be living twice as long, yet I’m barely making it. I apologise; I didn’t mean to aggravate you.

“That is the last thing that I wanted to do, but you asked me to be honest and that was me being honest… sorry.”

Peter carried on their chat after they were back at the flat, saying, “Maybe I was just having a horrible day. I apologise for anything I said before.

“How about we just walk away and watch TV? You are aware of my love for you; without you, I am nothing, but I want to be more than that. Is that something you can comprehend?

“You will ultimately leave me if I don’t resolve this. I’m not experiencing a midlife crisis, but I’ve lost my identity. When I glance in the mirror, I don’t recognise the reflection.”

Later, after Carla had gotten away from Peter for a while, she ran into Tina O’Brien’s character Sarah Barow in the workplace.

Carla said, when someone asked why she was there, that she was having trouble coming up with a gift for Peter but had at last come up with something.

Sarah looked horrified as she took up the piece of paper and questioned, “Are you sure about this?” as the printer whirred.

After the show, viewers claimed to figure out what Peter’s gift was, and they discussed it on their X accounts—previously known as Twitter.

“I feel sick, I think it’s divorce papers,” tweeted @soapextras.

Cam responded: “Is she giving him divorce papers??? #Corrie.”

“What’s Carla got him, a one-way ticket out of their relationship?” remarked Gary Ingfeld. #Corrie.

@NoniFlax101 made the following comment: “Carla and Peter—how tragic. #Corrie.

@_chloe__xx stated: “If that was any ounce of what Boxing Day is gonna be like then I’m not gonna survive these final Carla and Peter scenes #corrie.”

“Has she just printed off divorce papers?” inquired Trina Maydoch. I understand that he expressed unhappiness, but surely that will push him over the edge? (sic)
