In the wake of actress Anna Karen’s passing, the Mitchell family will bid farewell to Aunt Sal, a role she intermittently portrayed from 1996 to 2017.

The story that Anna Karen had perished in a home fire surfaced in February of last year.

A spokeswoman for the London Fire Brigade stated: “Unfortunately, a woman has passed away as a result of a home fire on Windsor Road in Ilford.” A fire destroyed a portion of the mid-terrace house’s bottom level. Regretfully, a lady was declared deceased on the spot.

By 2338, the fire was under control after the Brigade was contacted at 2240. About twenty firemen from the fire stations in Barking and Ilford, together with three fire engines, responded to the scene. Investigating the cause of the fire is underway.

A representative for EastEnders added the following at the time:

“We are very sorry to learn of Anna Karen’s passing.” Just as those who worked with Anna on EastEnders will never forget her warmth, compassion, fun, and good humour, the viewers will never forget the bright, quick-witted, and very popular character that Anna developed in Aunt Sal. Our sympathies and affection are with Anna’s friends and family.

Sal, the sassy sister of Peggy (Barbara Windsor), was a powerful presence who never failed to make her presence known by giving her loved ones a realistic dose of truth.

The Mitchell clan comes from all around to pay their respects on the day of Aunt Sal’s funeral next week.

While Phil (Steve McFadden) maintains his feelings to himself and Alfie (Shane Richie) chooses to attend the funeral in Kat’s place, Kat (Jessie Wallace) worries at Walford.

In another scene, Sam (Kim Medcalf) commands Ben (Max Bowden) and Billy (Perry Fenwick) to come, but Phil isn’t persuaded by her abrupt concern for family.

Harold, Aunt Sal’s husband, makes a rare appearance at the church and gives a eulogy that brings the whole audience, including Phil, to tears.

Later, during the wake, Sam is horrified to learn from Harold that Aunt Sal left her, Phil, and Grant (Ross Kemp) £100,000; Harold then insists that Phil give over the money, to which Phil flatly refuses.

Subsequently, Sam is taken aback when an envious Alfie discloses that Phil had an affair with Emma (Patsy Kensit). Later, Phil plans to return to Peggy’s and use the inheritance money as leverage against her brother.

Will she be successful, though?
